The Old Thatched Inn Adstock

Old Thatched Inn Adstock

It turns out we were short of several large items of furniture when we moved into our new house in Tysoe, so a trip to IKEA was in our destiny. Our nearest branch is in Milton Keynes and on our way I noticed the Old Thatched Inn Adstock sponsored one of town’s many roundabouts. So it was lucky serendipity when Tom and I were offered the chance to pay the team a visit last weekend.

The Old Thatched Inn is certainly its namesake and the pub dates back to 1645. Like many old buildings the Inn is a warren of rooms all centrally connected by the bar. Managed by ex-chef Andrew Judge and his wife Lisa, they believe in

‘casual dining with food sourced from freshest ingredients from small specialist producers, preferring local and organic.’

Although the Inn does feel quite large – it can seat up to 95 people – you don’t feel like you get lost in the sea of diners. With a team of eight staff plus five chefs, pretty much all your needs are catered for.  But it wasn’t just the number of staff that impressed me; it was also their level of professionalism, which you don’t see that often in ‘country gastro pubs’. (Often it’s the slightly half-hearted teenagers…)

There’s a comfy lounge waiting area where we enjoyed a plate of antipasti. Tom had panfried Aylesbury duck breast with (unusually) a duck faggot, cabbage and mash swede. I couldn’t decide and ended up panic choosing, pan fried chicken breast with tomato and pesto orzo pasta.

As we know Tom is a cheese fiend and the call from the Welsh Black Bomber, Quick’s Vintage Cheddar and Bath Organic Soft Cheese was just to loud. And the warm banana bread and honeycomb ice cream was very satisfying indeed.

Things I need to know about visiting the Old Thatched Inn Adstock:

  • Booking is advisable on, we visited on a Saturday night at the conservatory restaurant was full.
  • Do ask to see their extensive wine list – over 40 varieties.
  • You can visit them here: http://www.theoldthatchedinn.co.uk/ (That’s owner Andrew giving the virtual intro!)

Disclaimer: Our dinner was kindly organised by the team at Old Thatched Inn Adstock, but our taste buds are very much our own.
