Nell’s Dairy at Burford Garden Company

Since my visit to Nell’s Dairy last summer and meeting Flo & the girls, I’ve definitely become an advocate of the golden stuff. And although I was a fan of their unique vending machines, Tom and I did have some trouble with the one at the Kingham Plough (you can read about that unfortunate incident here!) So at the Burford Garden Company the team have done away with their vending machine in favour of stocking the bottles on the shelf (Much easier…)

Lisa, from the Dairy’s PR team, does keep me up to date with the farm’s goings on and sent through a recipe for an upscaled Brioche and Butter pudding using Nell’s milk, celebrating the launch of their new online deliveries. A trip to the Burford Garden Centre to replenish our stocks was now in order.

The Burford Garden Company has morphed quite substantially over the last 20 years since my parents used to frequent when I was a tot. Back then the best part about the place was the climbing frame (which has since been upgraded.)

The family behind the Burford Garden Company has worked hard to turn it from the slightly derelict sheep farm bought in 1975 into the Cotswold shopping mecca it is now. It is true that you probably pay top whack for most of their produce, but ‘their products are different and how they present them is different too.’ Burford is more about the shopping experience, more than finding a bargain.

Burford Garden Company

It embodies that cool-Cotswold lifestyle more than anything else; it’s the only garden centre I know to have its own art gallery and an award winning 300 seating café and restaurant. It’s even had spin offs with pop up shops in London, Wilderness Festival and their own studio in Shoreditch.

Every time I’ve visited it feels like the car park has grown to accommodate the visitors that flock from all around. It is quite feasible to spend several hours simply mooching about the Food Hall, Heritage Kitchen, Little Burford Children’s store or browsing their House and Home range. (I’ve nearly bought a Tibetan fishing boat table twice!)

With Nell’s Dairy milk secured, we packed off home to diligently try our hand at the recipe – it was lush! I’ve shared a tweaked version of it here, if you’d like to give it ago:

Brioche and butter pudding – serves 8 – 10 approx.

  • 8 egg yolks
  • 125g caster sugar
  • 1L Nell’s dairy milk
  • 1 vanilla pod
  • 1 loaf of brioche (roughly 500g) sliced and buttered
  • 45 ml dark rum
  • 10g toasted flaked almonds
  • 200g sultanas
  • ½ – 1 orange zest (depending on your taste buds!)
  1. Soak the sultanas in the rum.
  1. Whisk yolks and sugar together until pale colour.
  1. Meanwhile boil the milk with the vanilla pod. When ready, pour into the egg mixture, whisking constantly
  1. Grease a deep glass dish or roasting tray, and place one layer of sliced brioche on the bottom. (This quantity made sooo much I had to put it in 2 dishes!)
  1. Layer with soaked sultanas, orange zest and flaked almonds.
  1. Add another layer of the brioche and remaining sultanas, flaked almonds, orange zest sprinkle on the top.
  1. Gently pour the milk mixture over the brioche, and then bake at 180C until it sets (about 45min.)
